How it got started

Brett is a 10 year old 5th grader at Brown School who lives in Madison with his parents and two sisters. In 2010, he read in a children’s almanac that 6,000 people die each day from water related diseases, most of them children. The article also mentioned the LifeStraw, an affordable, portable water filter worn around the neck that provides clean drinking water from local sources. With great persistence, he figured out a way that he could help these children. From a school fair to presentations at several rotary clubs , school and church groups he has raised about $12,000. That is about 2000 LifeStraws at $5-6 each! All of the money he raises goes to the 1090 foundation of the Fort Lauderdale, FL Rotary Club. Through their partnership with the manufacturer and other organizations they are distributed to those in need in countries such as Uganda and Haiti.
